The local government is important when it comes to creating the environment within which the populace lives day-to-day. From ensuring that the roads are in good condition, waste is effectively collected, to providing housing and educational opportunities, the local government is responsible for a lot of services that we use on a day-to-day basis.
What Is Local Government?
Local government can be defined as councils that oversee particular geographical regions, such as cities or towns. In the United Kingdom, these councils can either be county, district, or unitary councils. Local authorities are tasked with the responsibility of providing public services and policy implementations in these geographical regions.
As stated by the United Kingdom Government, local authorities have a major role in offering crucial services according to the requirements of the citizens (UK Government, 2023). Councillors elected by the citizens are charged with the responsibility of making decisions regarding policies and expenditures in the local regions.
Typically, decisions in local government are made via meetings held by the council. Such meetings are typically conducted in an open forum where issues like applications for planning permission and development projects are discussed.
The councillors discuss the various matters, evaluate proposals, and make voting decisions regarding the matter under discussion. Some councils also establish specialized committees like the planning committee, among others. According to the Local Government Association, transparency in the process of decision-making is important for accountability purposes (LGA, 2023).
What Is Civic Participation?
Definition of Civic Participation
Civic participation is defined as an individual’s engagement in community-related activities that allow for influencing decision-making processes in communities.
It has been found that civic participation results in more effective policy formulation and positive community development. According to the Electoral Commission (2022), citizens’ involvement in the community allows for addressing issues that are relevant for the community members.
Ways to Get Involved
- Participate in Local Elections
One of the easiest and most effective forms of participation is through voting. The local election determines who will be elected as representatives for your area.
- Attend Local Council Meetings
Many of the local council meetings are open to members of the public. This gives you the chance to keep up-to-date with what is going on and understand how decision-making occurs.
- Get Involved in Consultations
The local authority often consults the public about certain issues or projects. These could be through questionnaires or consultations.
- Approach Your Local Councillor
The councillors work for you and you can talk to them about any problems or queries you have.
- Become Part of Community Groups/Coalitions
There are neighbourhood groups that you can get involved with locally.
Overview
Involvement in local government assists in making sure that the decision-making process is a just one. The World Bank has noted that participation ensures that governance becomes transparent and accountable (World Bank, 2021). Furthermore, participation empowers people through collaboration and a sense of duty to act on behalf of the entire community.
